Summary of the Project
The “Welcomeship – Building Inclusive Communities through Community-Based Entrepreneurship” project was launched in response to the rising negative attitudes towards immigrants and refugees in several European countries, which posed a challenge to fundamental EU values like human dignity, equality, solidarity, and freedom. The initiative aimed to address these issues by fostering more inclusive communities, altering stakeholder perceptions, and influencing local and regional policies. It focused on presenting young migrants and refugees as valuable contributors rather than threats, by highlighting their potential and providing them with new opportunities.

The project involved developing and piloting the Welcomeship model in seven communities across six European countries, encompassing five languages. This model, which relies on non-formal learning methods, was designed to bridge gaps in collaboration and dialogue between local residents, young people, and migrants. By working together in this inclusive setting, the project aimed to enhance understanding and cooperation within communities.

The target group included young people with fewer opportunities, such as local youth, migrants, and refugees. Youth workers, community stakeholders, and policy makers were also engaged to broaden the project’s impact and ensure a comprehensive approach to inclusivity.Training was provided to youth workers, who then became trainers of the Welcomeship community-based entrepreneurship model. This training involved delivering a five-module entrepreneurship course to 109 young migrants, refugees, and local youth with fewer opportunities in Germany, Sweden, Finland, the UK, Portugal, and Italy. The project combined local workshops and online learning with community events known as Welcomeship Nights, which facilitated interactions among young people, community stakeholders, and policy makers.

The project’s activities reached over 1,000 participants through various community events, including 24 Welcomeship Nights and 9 multiplier events. Additionally, the project engaged nearly 29,000 people through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram and directly reached 4,000 individuals through mailing. The project facilitated extensive peer exchange and learning through two partner meetings in Berlin, a Training of Trainers in Solna, a blended mobility event in Albenga, and various online platforms and coaching sessions. Several key outputs were produced and refined, including the Welcomeship Learning Kit, and a Guide for Inclusive Communities with policy recommendations.

The project had a significant impact, with young participants gaining entrepreneurial skills, building confidence, and becoming more integrated into their communities, with some even launching their own projects. Youth workers developed new competencies as trainers and community-oriented professionals. Partner organizations became key advocates for inclusion, and community stakeholders and policy makers engaged more actively in supporting inclusive policies. Overall, the Welcomeship project underscored the importance of embracing diversity and multiculturalism as vital assets for building stronger, more inclusive societies in Europe.

Significance of the Project
The “Welcomeship” project is important because it addresses the pressing need for greater inclusivity and support for young migrants and refugees in Europe. By providing these individuals with entrepreneurial skills and fostering a sense of belonging, the project helps to counteract negative stereotypes and integrate them more effectively into their communities. This approach not only empowers young people by recognizing and nurturing their potential but also strengthens social cohesion by promoting understanding and collaboration among diverse groups. Moreover, the project influences policy by demonstrating the value of inclusive practices and supporting the development of more equitable policies. In essence, it contributes to building stronger, more resilient communities that embrace and benefit from diversity.
